Dementia gardens
As general stress levels rise and our population ages the incidence of dementia is increasing
As specialist sensory designers we understand the need for and potential of dementia gardens. Our international experience of dementia garden design has shown positive nature connections can enrich and enhance the senses of those with even profound memory loss.
Research shows memory gains, mobility gains and improved mood where people have either quality green views or ideally, can access garden spaces year round. Sensory gardens for people living with dementia de-stress and provide deep memory prompts. Dementia gardens are interactive - designed to be able to touch, taste, smell, hear and see, to explore, to nurture, and to share. |
"A focus on health promotion by design can be used to inspire innovative design and infrastructure solutions that facilitate an active lifestyle and enable the successful management of physical, psychological and emotional stress in our daily lives." International Academy for Design & Health.
With knowledge comes understanding. We share our knowledge through livable city and slow city urban design, care home dementia gardens, and residential dementia gardens to support people to live in the community for as long as possible.
